Measles Outbreak Claims Two More Children as National Death Toll Reaches 747
Two more children have died from symptoms associated with measles in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities linked to the virus to 747 since the outbreak began on March 15. According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the two most recent deaths were recorded in the Dhaka and Sylhet divisions.
While the total toll includes 93 laboratory-confirmed measles deaths, the vast majority of casualties—654 children—have succumbed to complications linked to the disease's symptoms. The public health crisis has shown little sign of abating, with 818 new cases presenting with measles-like symptoms reported across the country within the last day alone. Since mid-March, the total number of individuals exhibiting these symptoms has reached 108,998.
Clinical testing over the previous 24 hours identified 128 confirmed cases of measles. This contributes to a cumulative total of 13,198 confirmed infections recorded since the outbreak started. Despite the ongoing transmission, health officials noted that no deaths were attributed directly to confirmed measles cases during the most recent reporting period.
Healthcare facilities continue to manage a heavy patient load, with 92,031 children having been hospitalized due to measles symptoms since March 15. Data from the DGHS indicates that the recovery rate remains relatively high, as 88,419 patients have been discharged following treatment.
