A 14-year-old girl has been arrested in Kaliganj, Gazipur, after she voluntarily turned herself into local police and confessed to drowning a two-year-old toddler in a bucket of water. The incident, which took place Saturday afternoon, has shocked the local community and resulted in a murder case filed by the victim’s father on Sunday morning.

According to police reports, the teenage suspect, a ninth-grade student, walked into the Kaliganj police station shortly after the incident and approached Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jonaki Akter. The girl reportedly asked to be placed in custody, admitting she had killed two-year-old Arisha Akter by holding her underwater in a bucket. When questioned about the motive, the suspect claimed that her mother had been showing excessive affection toward the victim—whose family lived in a rented room at their home—and expressed frustration that the child had repeatedly pestered her for biscuits. She maintained there were no other underlying disputes with the family.

The victim, Arisha, was the daughter of Akash Sheikh and Mosammat Sharmin, a couple originally from Rajbari who worked as industrial laborers in Kaliganj. According to her parents’ account, the toddler had been playing near the house shortly before she went missing. Her mother initially discovered the child in the water-filled bucket near a tube well, believing at the time that the drowning was a tragic accident. The girl was rushed to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors confirmed she was already dead upon arrival.

The suspect detailed the sequence of events to investigators, stating that she lured the toddler to the tube well, filled a bucket with water, and held the child upside down by her legs for approximately five minutes. The medical staff at the health complex alerted the authorities once they discovered the nature of the child’s arrival at the facility.
