Tarique Rahman Pledges Justice for July Uprising Victims While Calling for National Unity

Prime Minister Tareque Rahman pledged on Saturday to honor the legacy of the July uprising by ensuring comprehensive rehabilitation and support for the families of the martyrs and those injured during the movement. Addressing the National July Conference at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Dhaka, the Prime Minister emphasized that providing recognition and long-term care to those who sacrificed for the country is a sacred responsibility of his government.
The Prime Minister asserted that the struggle for justice for the victims of the July killings would be conducted within the country. While committing to accountability, he cautioned that the process must be deliberate and fair to ensure that justice is served without devolving into retribution. He underscored that although the pursuit of justice may involve procedural delays, the priority remains ensuring that the guilty are held properly accountable.

Reflecting on the significance of the August 5 transition, the Prime Minister stated that the achievements of the uprising belong to all pro-democracy citizens of Bangladesh, rather than any individual or single political entity. He framed the event as the culmination of the collective sacrifice of the people and urged national unity, arguing that the country cannot move forward if it remains fractured by division. He called upon citizens to unite for the welfare of the nation, suggesting that the ultimate validation of the martyrs’ sacrifices will be the sustained development and prosperity of the Bangladeshi people.
The conference, organized by the July 24 Martyr Family Society and the July Warriors central executive committee, featured testimonials from hundreds of family members who shared their experiences and grievances with the Prime Minister. The event opened with religious observances and a screening of a documentary detailing the events of the July movement, centered on the theme “Bangladesh First.”

During the proceedings, Prime Minister Rahman presented commemorative tokens to the families of the martyrs, who in turn presented a memorial to the Prime Minister. The session, chaired by Chief Whip Nurul Islam, included remarks from several cabinet members, including Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, and Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher. The event was attended by a broad cross-section of dignitaries, including foreign ambassadors, high commissioners, military and civil officials, and professional leaders.
