RAB arrests three for kidnapping and robbing passenger in Mymensingh

A 19-year-old student narrowly escaped a violent robbery attempt in Mymensingh on Monday after leaping from a moving autorickshaw to flag down a passing Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) patrol vehicle. The victim, Likhan Hasan, a resident of Nalitabari in Sherpur, was waiting for a bus at the Digharkanda bypass area when he was abducted by a three-member criminal gang.

According to reports from RAB, Hasan was traveling from his sister’s home in Gazipur to Sherpur when he stopped at a roadside transit point. As he waited for transport to the Patgudam Bridge bus terminal, an autorickshaw pulled up alongside him. The occupants, including the driver, forcibly pulled Hasan into the vehicle. Once inside, the assailants began physically assaulting the teenager, demanding his valuables and threatening his life. They successfully seized his mobile phone and 310 taka in cash before continuing their journey.

The situation took a dramatic turn near the Moynar Mor area as the autorickshaw passed a mobile unit of the Rapid Action Battalion that was conducting a separate patrol. Seeing the law enforcement vehicle, Hasan threw himself from the moving autorickshaw onto the road. RAB officers immediately secured the victim and intercepted the vehicle, taking the three suspects into custody on the spot.

The suspects have been identified as 20-year-old Rakibul Islam, 20-year-old Sabbir Hossain, and 19-year-old Mohammad Soad, all residents of Mymensingh. Following their arrest, the trio was transferred to the Kotwali Model Police Station on Tuesday. Hasan has since filed a formal criminal complaint, and the suspects were produced before a local court that same afternoon.

Officials from RAB-14 stated that initial interrogations reveal the gang has been operating for a significant period, routinely targeting unsuspecting passengers along major highways. By forcing victims into autorickshaws and holding them at knifepoint, the group systematically stripped them of cash and personal electronics. Police have launched a broader investigation to identify and dismantle the remaining members of the criminal network.
