Student death at Lakshmipur academy sparks violent protests and vandalism
Authorities in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, have launched an investigation into the death of a 14-year-old student whose body was found hanging in the dormitory of Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan Academy on Tuesday afternoon. The victim, eighth-grader Mehedi Hasan, was discovered suspended from a window grille, prompting police to initially treat the incident as a suspected suicide.
The discovery of the teenager’s body sparked immediate outrage among local residents, who gathered at the educational institution later that evening. Alleging that Mehedi had been murdered and his body staged to look like a suicide, a mob vandalized the school’s main gate and reception area. The unrest persisted until midnight, requiring intervention from both local administration officials and police to restore order.
Mehedi’s father, Zia Uddin, has vehemently rejected the suicide theory, asserting that his son was in good health and lacked any motive for such an action. The family maintains that the death was a homicide and has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ramganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kazi Atiqur Rahman, who arrived at the scene to calm the protesters, confirmed that an investigation is underway. He stated that the authorities are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the official cause of death, pledging that appropriate legal action will follow based on those findings.
According to Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury, additional police units were deployed to the academy to manage the crowd and prevent further damage. While the situation has since returned to normal, the school remains the center of intense local scrutiny as investigators continue to process evidence.
