Retired Major arrested in Dhaka for involvement in Ziaur Rahman assassination

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch has transferred retired Major Mozaffar Hossain, 77, to the custody of the military police at Dhaka Cantonment. Hossain, who had been a fugitive for decades, was apprehended in connection with the assassination of former President Ziaur Rahman.

Authorities confirmed that Hossain had remained in hiding since the 1981 assassination. Following an investigation that utilized intelligence reports and digital forensics, a detective team identified his location in the capital's Banani neighborhood. The operation, conducted under the guidance of Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, resulted in the suspect's arrest late Wednesday evening.

After confirming the identity of the former officer during interrogation, the Detective Branch notified the Armed Forces Division. The formal transfer of custody to the military police was finalized on Thursday evening in accordance with established legal procedures.
