Protesters at Dhaka University demand justice for elderly woman killed in Narsingdi station robbery

Protesters gathered at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on Saturday to demand justice for Bobby Begum, a 70-year-old woman with speech and hearing impairments who was killed following a brutal robbery at Narsingdi’s Methikanda Railway Station. Organized under the banner of “Concerned Citizens,” the demonstration drew students, human rights activists, and cultural workers to highlight the incident and call for immediate action against the perpetrators.
The fatal assault occurred on the night of July 4, when a group of assailants targeted the elderly woman as she slept in a vacant room at the railway station. The attackers severely beat Begum and looted the modest savings she had accumulated over years. She succumbed to her injuries on the night of July 7, sparking widespread outrage among those who view the crime as a reflection of deteriorating public safety.

Speakers at the rally described the attack as a systemic failure rather than an isolated criminal act, arguing that the incident illustrates a broader climate of insecurity facing vulnerable citizens across the country. They criticized the lack of effective government intervention in the face of rising trends of mugging, assault, and violence against women and children. Participants warned that without swift and decisive legal action to hold the culprits accountable, criminal impunity will continue to flourish.
The protesters issued a formal set of demands, including the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of all individuals involved in the murder. They further called for the government to provide adequate compensation and state support to the victim’s family, while urging authorities to implement more robust measures to ensure the safety of the general public.
