Police charge 24 in Jhenaidah following banned student wing protest

Police in Jhenaidah have filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act following an unauthorized protest march staged by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in the city’s Payra Chattar area. Authorities have already arrested three individuals in connection with the incident, which occurred early Monday morning.
The demonstration gained traction online after district BCL general secretary Al-Imran posted a 1-minute and 28-second video of the event on social media. The footage depicts more than 50 activists marching from Payra Chattar to the Government K.C. College area, carrying banners and chanting slogans against the current government, including demands to revoke the ban on the Awami League and opposition to ongoing legal proceedings against Sheikh Hasina. In the accompanying caption, Al-Imran declared, “Moving forward from where we left off.”

Following the publication of the video, Sub-Inspector Rajib Ali of the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station filed a formal complaint. The case names 24 leaders and activists from both the BCL and the Jubo League, while an additional 10 to 15 unidentified individuals have also been implicated.
Acting on the case, law enforcement conducted overnight raids and took three suspects into custody: Jubo League member Mehedi Hasan Sohel, 35, and BCL activists Niloy Farhan, 20, and Ashik, 22. All three have been presented before the court.

Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Asaduzzaman confirmed that the investigation remains active. Police are currently conducting further operations to apprehend the remaining suspects named in the case.
