PM pledges 100,000 new health jobs in Bangladesh

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today announced an ambitious plan to recruit 100,000 health workers, 80% of whom will be women, to extend healthcare services to underserved rural areas and enhance public health awareness across the nation. Speaking at a civic reception in the Sylhet City Corporation premises, the Prime Minister emphasized the critical need to bridge the healthcare gap between urban and rural populations.
The newly appointed health workers will be tasked with visiting homes, particularly focusing on educating rural women and homemakers about preventive health measures. Their mandate includes providing guidance on diet to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart conditions, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ensuring proper hygiene practices.

Prime Minister Rahman underscored the government’s long-term vision to reduce the overall burden of illness, thereby improving the quality of care for those who require hospital treatment. He stated that a more informed and healthier population would alleviate pressure on the healthcare system, allowing for better management of acute cases.
During his address, Prime Minister Rahman also acknowledged the agricultural damage caused by flash floods and heavy rainfall in the Haor regions, including Sunamganj. He further highlighted ongoing government efforts to address pervasive waterlogging issues plaguing various parts of the country, including Sylhet and Chattogram.

Discussing the recent heavy rains, Rahman noted localized water accumulation in Sylhet and referenced past reports of severe waterlogging in Chattogram, attributing these to excessive precipitation. He affirmed the government’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions for these recurring problems.
In a pledge to ensure potable water access for Sylhet city, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the declining underground water levels, a problem affecting not only Sylhet but also Dhaka and other major cities. To combat this and address waterlogging, he announced a nationwide canal excavation program aimed at conserving excess rainwater for agricultural use and human consumption.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Rahman arrived in Sylhet from Dhaka, beginning his visit by offering prayers at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R.). He then inaugurated the foundation stone laying ceremony for a project to enhance the aesthetics and flood resilience of both banks of the Surma River at Chandnighat, adjacent to the Sylhet Circuit House.
Following his speech at the civic reception, the Prime Minister proceeded to Kandi Gaon Union in Sylhet Sadar Upazila to launch the re-excavation program for the Basia Canal. His day’s itinerary includes a rest stop at Sylhet Circuit House, inaugurating the ‘Notun Kuri Sports’ program by the Ministry of Youth and Sports at Sylhet District Stadium, attending a party meeting at the District Shilpakala Academy, and departing for Dhaka from Sylhet Osmani International Airport in the evening.
The civic reception was presided over by Sylhet City Corporation Administrator and District BNP President Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury. Dignitaries present included Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir, and National Parliament Whip GK Gaus. The event commenced with a welcome speech from Sylhet City Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rezai Raffin Sarker and was anchored by the City Corporation’s Chief Property Officer Sunanda Roy. The audience included the Prime Minister’s wife, Zubaida Rahman, along with Members of Parliament from various Sylhet constituencies, academics, politicians, civil society members, and hundreds of representatives from diverse professions.
