Two Madaripur police officers suspended after detainee escapes station custody
A 35-year-old woman escaped police custody in Madaripur late Thursday night by breaking through the window grilles of a makeshift detention area at the Sadar Model Police Station. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. while the woman was being held on allegations of involvement in illicit activities.
According to Madaripur Superintendent of Police Md. Habibur Rahman, the police station’s primary facility is currently under construction, forcing operations to relocate temporarily to the ground floor of the officer-in-charge’s residence. Due to the lack of a formal lockup, the suspect had been confined to a room on the building’s veranda.
Local reports indicate the woman was initially detained by Sub-Inspector Moksedur Rahman of the Iterpool police outpost before being transferred to the station. Following the escape, Superintendent Rahman confirmed the withdrawal of two officers, including Sub-Inspector Ramzan Ali, who was the duty officer at the time of the incident. Both personnel have been reassigned to the police lines pending further investigation.
A three-member inquiry committee, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Fariha Rafiq, has been formed to investigate the security lapse. The committee is tasked with submitting a comprehensive report within three working days.
Superintendent Rahman stated that law enforcement is currently conducting an active search operation to recapture the woman. He emphasized that strict legal action will be taken against the involved officers should the investigation confirm professional negligence. When approached for comment, Sub-Inspector Moksedur Rahman declined to speak on the matter, directing inquiries to the district’s additional superintendent.
