Noakhali court sentences three to death for 2016 triple murder over pet dog dispute

A Noakhali court on Sunday sentenced three individuals to death and three others to life imprisonment for the 2016 murder of three friends in Maijdee town. The verdict follows a decade-long legal process stemming from a dispute over a dog being bathed in a pond.

Special Judge of the Noakhali District and Sessions Court, Mohammad Showkat Ali, delivered the judgment. Additional Public Prosecutor Mohammad Barkat Ullah confirmed the outcome.

The three individuals sentenced to death are Omar Nasir Saju, Omar Sharif Sultan, and Mohammad Sourav. All three remain fugitives. Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, the court sentenced each to death and imposed a fine of 100,000 taka.

The three individuals sentenced to life imprisonment are Firoz Mahmud, Kudarat Ullah, and Harunur Rashid. Firoz Mahmud is currently in custody, while the other two remain at large. Each was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor and a fine of 50,000 taka, with an additional year of hard labor required should the fine remain unpaid. The court acquitted two other defendants, Faisal Mahmud Rabbi and Mohammad Mamun, due to a lack of evidence.

The incident occurred on March 21, 2016. According to case records, the violence was triggered by an argument between Mohammad Sourav and a local man named Anwar Hossain over the former bathing a dog in a pond near the old Noakhali Government College campus. A mediation was scheduled for that evening to resolve the dispute.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., three of Hossain’s friends—Fazle Huda, a student at Noakhali Government College, and his companions Mohammad Wasim and Mohammad Yasin—arrived at the college gate. Perpetrators associated with Sourav opened fire on the trio. Fazle Huda died at the scene, while Wasim and Yasin succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Following the killings, the victim’s mother, Kamrunnahar Begum, filed a murder case at the Begumganj Police Station. Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Mohammad Nure Alam of the District Detective Branch submitted a charge sheet to the court on May 31, 2017, naming eight individuals and several unidentified accomplices.

Ariful Islam, the brother of the late Fazle Huda, expressed satisfaction with the verdict and demanded the swift arrest of the fugitives to ensure the sentences are carried out. Representatives for the plaintiff claimed the convicted individuals were affiliated with the banned Awami League political party.
