Monsoon floodwaters draw crowds to Chalan Beel as tourism potential emerges
The arrival of monsoon rains has transformed Bangladesh’s Chalan Beel into a sprawling aquatic landscape, drawing thousands of visitors to the Kundail Bridge area in Sirajganj’s Tarash upazila. The region has become a bustling hub for tourists from Sirajganj, Natore, Bogura, and surrounding districts, who gather to experience the vast, wind-swept waters and the traditional lifestyle of the marshlands.
Accessing the area has become increasingly seamless, with local boatmen operating out of ghats near Kamarshon village. Visitors can choose between motorized vessels and traditional wooden dinghies, with fare structures ranging from modest individual seat prices to hourly rentals for private groups. The influx of tourists has enlivened the riverbanks, where families, professionals, and students alike congregate to swim, take photographs, or simply enjoy the interplay of the water and the lush green horizon.
For the local economy, the monsoon season serves as a vital economic engine. Boat operators report a significant increase in demand, working from noon until dusk to ferry sightseers across the expansive waters. This seasonal surge has also paved the way for local entrepreneurs, who have established temporary tea stalls and snack vendors along the embankment to serve the growing crowds. Residents attribute the rise in visitor numbers to improved road conditions between Tarash and Kundail, combined with favorable water levels that make the expanse particularly picturesque this year.
The phenomenon has prompted calls for more formal development of the area’s tourism potential. Kh M Rezaul Karim, a researcher and educator, suggested that with structured planning and coordinated efforts from relevant authorities, the region could be developed into a sustainable tourism destination.
Local administration officials are currently evaluating the infrastructure needs to better accommodate the rising interest. According to Tarash Upazila Executive Officer Nusrat Jahan, the local government is actively working on initiatives to improve visitor facilities. As the monsoon peak persists, the Chalan Beel continues to thrive as a unique intersection of natural beauty and human enterprise, offering a fleeting but vibrant escape for thousands of visitors each year.
