DU student publishes book documenting womens roles in July uprising
Tahmid Sakib, a fourth-year student in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka, presented his new book, "The Role of Women in the July Mass Uprising," to Vice-Chancellor Professor A.B.M. Obaidul Islam during a meeting at the university administration office on Tuesday.
The publication, released by the Department of Films and Publications under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, serves as an extensive documentation of female participation in the 2024 uprising. To compile the work, Sakib spent six months interviewing students from schools, colleges, and universities across the country, including his own institution.
Reflecting on his motivation, Sakib noted that his experience reporting from the front lines during the July protests provided him with a firsthand view of the spontaneous and pivotal role women played in shifting the trajectory of the movement. He expressed that he felt compelled to preserve these narratives, as many of the women who contributed significantly to the protests remained largely absent from public discourse following the political transition.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Obaidul Islam commended the research, emphasizing that the contribution of women during the uprising was extraordinary and deserving of formal recognition. He praised Sakib’s efforts to ensure that the sacrifices and actions of these individuals remain part of the historical record.
The Vice-Chancellor further expressed hope that Sakib’s initiative would inspire other students at the University of Dhaka to engage in rigorous research and scholarship concerning critical issues facing the nation’s history, society, and state.
