Miscreants set fire to July uprising memorial in Narayanganj

Unidentified individuals set fire to a memorial dedicated to the martyrs of the July uprising in Narayanganj on Monday night. The monument, located in the city’s Hajiganj area, was targeted by two suspects arriving on a motorcycle, who reportedly threw a flammable object—believed to be doused in kerosene or gasoline—at the structure.

Police stationed at a temporary camp near the site responded immediately to the blaze and managed to extinguish it before significant damage occurred. According to local law enforcement, the incident was captured on video by an unknown individual, and the footage began circulating on social media platforms by Tuesday afternoon.

Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Shamim Hossain confirmed that a team of five officers, led by an assistant sub-inspector, is currently deployed at the site. Following the incident, officials initiated a thorough investigation, including a review of CCTV footage from surrounding roads and buildings to identify the perpetrators.

Authorities are also investigating whether the act was politically motivated, specifically assessing potential involvement by members of the banned Awami League or its affiliated organizations. Additional Superintendent (Operations and Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi stated that while the monument itself remains intact, efforts to track down and arrest those responsible for the provocation remain ongoing.

The memorial was inaugurated last July by five advisers of the interim government to honor those who lost their lives during the student-led mass uprising.
