Angry Crowds Surround Narayanganj Police Station After Fatal Stabbing and Alleged Official Negligence
Angry residents surrounded the Bondor Police Station in Narayanganj on Sunday, protesting the death of an 18-year-old stabbing victim and the alleged negligence of local law enforcement. The protest erupted after the body of Md. Jobayer, who succumbed to his injuries earlier that morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, was returned to the area.
Jobayer, originally from Pabna and a resident of Enayetnagar, was attacked on the night of June 3 while returning home from work. According to local accounts, three muggers intercepted the youth near a bridge in Enayetnagar, stabbing him multiple times before stealing his mobile phone and fleeing the scene. Despite being rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to Dhaka for advanced care, he failed to survive his wounds.
The protest was fueled by allegations that the police initially refused to register a formal complaint regarding the assault. Neighbors claim that when Jobayer’s father attempted to report the crime at the Bondor Police Station, officers demanded a bribe to initiate the case, ultimately turning the family away when payment was not made.
In response to the public outcry and allegations of professional misconduct, authorities have withdrawn Sub-Inspector Masud Rana from the station and reassigned him to the police lines. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Moktar Ashraf Uddin addressed the protesters, promising a thorough investigation into the incident and the conduct of his officers.
The OC stated that while he had no record of the victim’s family attempting to file a case prior to the death, one suspect has already been apprehended in connection with the incident. Police are currently holding the suspect on unrelated charges while waiting for the victim's family to formally initiate legal proceedings, at which point the suspect will be re-arrested and charged specifically for the murder of Jobayer.
