Grieving Sister of July Uprising Martyr Demands ‘July Charter’ and Referendum, Urges State Action

DHAKA — In a deeply emotional public appeal, the sister of a martyr from the historic July uprising has stepped forward to express her profound disillusionment, demanding the immediate formulation of a “July Charter” (July Sanad) and a national referendum to safeguard the ideals for which her brother gave his life.

Speaking directly to the media, she highlighted the agonizing reality faced by families of the martyrs, warning that the state’s failure to stand by these broken families sends a devastating message to the nation’s youth.

“We Made a Mistake” — A Sister’s Agony

Reflecting on the heavy price her family paid, she shared the isolation and fear that now haunt their daily lives.

“We made a mistake by joining the movement. We will not give our lives for the country anymore. No one should give their life for this country—think of your parents, your brothers, and your sisters first,” she stated in an emotional outburst that has sparked widespread conversations across social media regarding the unfulfilled promises of the uprising.

“My brother is gone. When I call his number, he doesn’t answer anymore. My mother and I just sit and wait for a phone call that will never come. I don’t see anyone looking out for us; everyone is just busy with their own lives. Except for me, my mother has no one left in this world. Whenever I step out of the house, she is gripped by terror. I see absolutely no one standing by my mother’s side.”

Direct Appeal to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Addressing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directly, she recalled a brief, poignant personal encounter they had shared at the Institution of Agriculturalists Bangladesh (IAB).

“You called me your sister when we met at the Agricultural Institute. You might not remember it now, but we spoke at length,” she noted, pointing out that despite those words, no official or representative had subsequently visited her grieving mother.

She urged the Prime Minister to use his executive authority and legislative majority to formalize the goals of the student-led mass movement.

The Legislative Demands:

• The July Charter (July Sanad): A formal constitutional document encapsulating the core state-reform demands achieved through the blood and sacrifice of the July movement.
• National Referendum: Enacting a referendum mechanism to institutionalize structural changes, ensuring that the achievements of the uprising cannot be undone by future political transitions.

“We have been waiting for the July Charter and the referendum with great anticipation,” she concluded. “Please do not let my brother’s sacrifice go to waste. Everything is in your hands now. You sit in Parliament—please, do something.”
