Two days of voting in the Supreme Court Bar Association elections are over, the results are awaited
Voting in the two-day election of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association, one of the country's top lawyers' organizations, has ended. Now it's time to start counting the votes and announce the results.
On April 2, a notice announced the date for the two-day elections (2026-27) of the association. Voting took place from 10:00 am yesterday, Wednesday and today, Thursday till 5:00 pm with a break of 1 hour in between. 4 thousand 48 out of 11 thousand 97 voters voted in this election.
The convener of the sub-committee on election management, senior lawyer. Miftah Uddin Chowdhury told Prothom Alo at seven in the evening that the polling was completed in a peaceful environment. 4 thousand 48 voters voted in 2 days. Counting of votes will start at night after the secondary process. He expressed hope that the results will be declared by 12 pm.
This election is held for 14 positions of the executive committee of this association for a period of one year. The posts are one president, two vice presidents, one editor, one treasurer, two associate editors and seven members. There are 40 candidates against 14 posts in this election.
This election of the association is called non-partisan. But apparently the election is done on a panel basis with candidates nominated from lawyers supporting political parties. In the past, association elections have always been contested between pro-BNP (known as Blue) and pro-Awami League (known as White) lawyers panel nominees.
However, a special general meeting (EGM) of the general members of the association was held on April 26. In view of the prohibition of party activities there, it was decided not to allow pro-Awami League lawyers to participate in the elections.
For the first time in the history of the association, pro-Awami lawyers (white panel) are not able to contest in this election. However, candidates from the BNP-backed Nationalist Lawyers Panel (Blue Panel), Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Lawyers Oikya Panel (Green Panel) and National Citizen Party (NCP)-backed National Lawyers Alliance Nominated Panel (Red-Green Panel) are contesting the elections. Candidates have been given for 14 posts from blue and green panel. The red-green panel has fielded candidates for six posts. There are some independent candidates outside these three panels.
AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon from BNP-supported Nationalist Lawyers Panel (Blue Panel) as President, Vice President for two posts. Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md. Shahjahan, Muhammad Ali as editor, Md. as treasurer. Ziaur Rahman, Maqsud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul participated in the two posts of co-editor. AKM Azad Hossain, HM Sanjid Siddiqui, Md. seven members. Kabir Hossain, Md. Tipu Sultan, Md. Zia Uddin Mia, Ripon Kumar Barua and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury have become candidates.
Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Lawyers Oikya Panel appointed Abdul Baten as President, vice-president in two posts. Abdul Haque and Moin Uddin Farooqui, AKM Rezaul Karim Khandkar as editor, SM Jahangir Alam as treasurer, two posts of co-editor. Tariqul Islam and Jobair Ahmad Bhuiyan participated in the election. Azim Uddin Patwari, Farzana Khanam, Israt Jahan Ani, Mahmudul Hasan, Mohd. Fayezullah, Md. Zubair Taib and Mohammad Naeem Uddin became Lincoln candidates.
The National Lawyers Alliance (NCP)-backed National Lawyers Alliance nominated panel (red-green panel) for six posts, including secretary. They are, SM Ajmal Hossain as editor, Mustafa Asghar Sharifi as co-editor and Amina Akhter as member, Kazi Akbar Ali, Md. Ban-e-Amin and Mohammad Mazharul Islam.
Apart from this, six more candidates have been nominated for various positions outside the three panels. Among them, Md. Yunus Ali Akand, editor Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiya, Md. Abu Yahia Dulal, Md. Omar Farooq, Mohammad Ashraf Uz-Zaman Khan and Tapan Kumar Das are members.
