Jagannath University student found safe seven days after disappearance

Mohammad Sirajul Islam, a sociology student at Jagannath University, has been found safe after a week-long disappearance that sparked widespread concern across the campus. The 2025-26 academic year student was discovered near the university’s main gate on Thursday, seven days after he was last seen.

The student, who had been missing since June 18, appeared disoriented upon his return. Describing his state of mind, Islam stated that he had arrived from Keraniganj but was unable to recount the events of the past week, noting that he required time to recover and return to a normal state. His father, Abul Kalam, confirmed that the family was alerted to his son’s location by an anonymous phone call earlier in the morning, during which Islam verified he was waiting at the university entrance.

The disappearance prompted an intensive search involving the student’s family, his peers, and the university administration. As anxiety over his whereabouts grew, the university held an emergency meeting on June 23 chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Rais Uddin. The session resulted in a coordinated mobilization effort involving student representatives, campus organizations, and the media to assist in the search.

Professor Rais Uddin expressed relief at the student’s recovery, crediting a collaborative effort between the university, law enforcement agencies, and intelligence services. He noted that the administration had worked closely with senior police officials and dispatched a team led by the university proctor to coordinate with the Dhanmondi police station.

The Vice-Chancellor extended his gratitude to the investigative teams and the wider community for their role in ensuring Islam’s safe return.
