Van driver Alamgir Hossain (44) wanted to send his college-educated son to Australia on a labor visa to bring prosperity to a poor family. For this, he sold the land and took a loan from NGOs and associations and handed over Tk 15 lakh to the broker.

However, instead of Australia, his son Shakib Hossain (21) was taken to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Shakib’s passport and one lakh dollars worth of Tk. After that he was held hostage and demanded another one and a half lakh taka. Alamgir Hossain sold the van for 50 thousand taka. He took another lakh rupees loan from a society at high interest and gave it to the broker. Since then, he has not been able to find any trace of his son.

Alamgir Hossain filed a case to get his son back. On February 16, he filed the case in Jessore’s Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Tribunal-1. The court directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Bagharpara police station to record the case as an affidavit. Accordingly, the case was recorded as an affidavit. Tariqul Islam (45) and Nazmul Hossain (35), sons of Mokles Molya of Kismat Mahmudpur village of Bagharpara upazila, have been made accused in the case.

On April 8, Alamgir Hossain’s house was seen, a two-room tin house on one side of the 14th century land. Two small rooms with brick walls on either side of the balcony of the house. A small kitchen is on the east side of the house. Alamgir Hossain said, he had 22 century land. Among them, 14th century house and 8th century litchi garden. He had an engine driven van. He has three sons and daughters. Two girls and one boy. He married his eldest daughter. Son Sakib Hossain was a 12th class student of Chatiantala United School and College of Bagharpara Upazila. The younger daughter is now an SSC candidate. He used to drive the van to support his children’s education and household expenses.

Alamgir Hossain also said that Nazmul Hossain of the same village was abroad for a long time. He returned to the country two years ago. Nazmul and his elder brother Tariqul Islam said that they got some visas as laborers in Australia. Salary is one lakh rupees per month. They lured their son Sakib Hossain in various ways with false promises and took Tk 15 lakh by promising to get a job as a laborer in a company in Australia.

Alamgir Hossain said that in a hurry to send his son abroad, he sold eight hundred acres of land with a litchi garden at a low price of only 4 lakh taka. He said, first he gave three lakhs to two brokers. After a few days, two brokers said that Shakib Hossain’s visa has been approved in Australia. After that, they demanded the remaining 12 lakh rupees by giving fake documents of Australian government visa approval to Alamgir. Alamgir took loans from five NGOs and took Rs 11 lakh from Gramya Samiti at high interest. He gave them 1 lakh taka for land sale and 11 lakh taka for loan. Shakib is supposed to join the company’s job in Australia within three months. After taking the money, they took Shakib to Uttara in Dhaka for medical examination and fingerprinting.

Alamgir Hossain said that the two brothers took Sakib Hossain from home on September 12 last year. He said that on September 14, he was taken to a hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal. Then they took the passport and one lakh dollars worth of Shakib. But the parents used to talk on the phone with the son. There they threatened Shakib and demanded one and a half lakh Bangladeshi taka. He sold the van and sent Tk 50,000 and Tk 1 lakh as interest from the association through mobile banking. After that they started physically and mentally torturing Shakib to collect more money. Shakib told this to his parents.

Alamgir Hossain realizes that his son has been cheated. He has been detained in a hotel in Nepal. He pressured Tariqul Islam and Nazmul Hussain to bring back his son. At this time they demanded another three lakh taka from Alamgir. He said that he had filed a case without any recourse. He alleged that the broker’s people have been calling and threatening him since the case. He has not been able to communicate with his son for the past one month.

Alamgir Hossain said, “I have sold all the land except the land of Matha Gonza. I also sold the van, the only source of income. I have taken a loan of 12.5 lakh taka from five NGOs and societies. There is daily interest. No avenue of income is open. I sent my son abroad and handed over all the money to the broker to bring a little prosperity to the family. Now I can’t find my son. Brokers are threatening people. On the one hand the thought of the son and on the other hand the thought of the loan money. Can’t sleep at night. There is no need to go abroad anymore, I want my son to return home safely.’

Alamgir Hossain’s wife Sonali Begum (38) said, ‘On March 9, the police came home to investigate. That day the police officer spoke with the son. We also talked about the son that day. Called his phone since afternoon but did not answer. The phone was found to be off since noon on March 12. Since then no one in the house has spoken to him. I can’t anymore. I want my son back.’

Last Monday afternoon, they went to the house of Tariqul Islam and Nazmul Hossain in Kismat Mahmudpur village of Bagharpara upazila of Jessore and they were not found. They are absconding since filing the case. When calling at that time, both of their mobile phones were found to be switched off.

Tariqul Islam’s wife Runa Begum was found at home. When asked where husband Tariqul Islam and Debor Nazmul Hossain are, he said, Nazmul does not live here. He lived in Malaysia. Back home, he lived at his in-laws’ house. Don’t know where you are now. He said Tariqul lives in Dhaka. Trading in raw materials. They have two daughters. He married his eldest daughter. She lives at home with her little daughter. He heard about the case and said, ‘My husband had a stroke. Not fully recovered yet. He was not among these. My husband has been made an accused in the case for Nazmul.

The investigating officer of the case, Bagharpara police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Govind Kumar Mandal said, the case has been registered as a statement. Investigation is going on in this regard. Efforts are on to arrest the accused in the case.
