Hijra was burnt to death by pouring petrol in Comilla, allegations against companions

Hijra Enamul Haque Shishir alias Mahi (35) died in a petrol fire in Comilla’s Burichong. He died on Sunday (May 17) afternoon while undergoing treatment in the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Mahi is the son of Kamrul Haque (Farhad) of Purnamati village of Burichong Municipality. But his family lives in Chhotara area of Comilla Nagar. Mahi got separated from her family about 10 years ago.

In this incident, Kamrul Haque filed a murder case at Burichong police station as a plaintiff on Sunday afternoon. In this, six-seven unidentified people have been accused by mentioning the names of three people. It has been alleged that Mahi was killed by pouring petrol on fire in a quarrel between transgenders.
Police have arrested one person in this incident. Police said there was a dispute between the transgender members over the sharing of drug money and control of the area. As a result, Mahi’s body was poured with petrol and set on fire.

According to police and local sources, another Hijra Zahirul Islam (APN) poured petrol on Mahi’s body and set her on fire at the CNG stand area in front of Muktijoddha Complex of Burichong Municipality at around 9 am on May 13. Local people rushed to Mahi’s scream. He was rescued with serious injuries and was first taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was quickly shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to the hospital doctors, the family members said that about 44 percent of Mahi’s body, including her airway, was severely burnt in the fire. His condition was critical from the beginning. He breathed his last on Sunday afternoon while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Talking to the local residents, it is known that some transgenders have built houses in the Burichong Municipality Muktijoddha Complex area and have been living there for a long time. It is alleged that some of them are involved in drug trade with the help of a local gang. The deceased Mahio had earlier been arrested by the law enforcement agencies for drug possession and spent some time in jail. Recently, a dispute arose between Mahi and Zaheer’s gang over the distribution of drug money and control of the area.
Mohammad Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Burichong police station, told Prothom Alo on Sunday night that one accused has already been arrested in the case filed by the victim’s father. Several police teams are working on the ground to bring the main accused Zaheer and others involved in the incident under the law.
