Bangladesh Forms Task Force to Tackle Gender Inequality and Improve Athlete Safety
The Bangladeshi government has established a five-member committee tasked with eradicating discrimination, ensuring safety, and fostering the empowerment of female athletes across the nation’s sporting landscape. Led by Jobera Rahman Linu, a former national table tennis champion and recipient of the National Sports Award, the initiative aims to dismantle systemic barriers that have long hindered the growth and professional security of women in sports.
According to a directive issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the primary objective is to create a secure, supportive environment conducive to the advancement of female talent. The committee is charged with developing comprehensive strategies to ensure the protection and sustained participation of women in all sporting disciplines. Central to their mandate is the establishment of female leadership, the provision of essential training and support for promising grassroots athletes, and the promotion of both physical and mental health.
Beyond safety and developmental concerns, the committee will address the critical issue of financial inequality. By identifying gaps in current investment and advocating for pay equity, the panel aims to eliminate the disparities that have historically marginalized women in the sporting sector. The initiative is designed to ensure that female athletes receive resources and recognition commensurate with their contributions to national sports.
In terms of accountability, the government has mandated that the committee submit progress reports every two months. To ensure the efficacy of their policies, the committee has been granted the authority to incorporate specialized experts into their ranks as needed, allowing them to adapt to specific challenges within the broader effort to achieve gender parity in athletics.
