Falling tree kills auto-rickshaw driver in Rangpur
A 55-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was killed Wednesday morning in Pirganj, Rangpur, when a large eucalyptus tree collapsed onto his moving vehicle. The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. near the Tiorbari Bridge on the Khalashpir-Kachdah road.
The victim, identified as Abdur Gafur Mia, a resident of Voterpara village in the Nawabganj sub-district of Dinajpur, died at the scene. Authorities reported that the impact of the falling tree and shattered glass caused fatal injuries to the driver, while a female passenger traveling in the rickshaw sustained injuries.
Local residents rushed to the scene following the crash to assist the survivors. The injured passenger was transported to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex for urgent medical care.
Officers from the Pirganj Police Station and personnel from the local Fire Service arrived shortly thereafter to conduct rescue operations and clear the debris from the roadway to restore traffic flow. Nazmul Sarkar, station officer of the Pirganj Fire Service, confirmed that the driver’s body was recovered and handed over to local law enforcement.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Najmul Haque of Pirganj Police Station stated that the body will be released to the victim's family following the completion of necessary legal procedures.
