Government introduces bill in parliament to establish Bogura University

The government has introduced a bill in the national parliament to establish a public university in Bogura, moving to formally replace the defunct Bogura Science and Technology University Act of 2001. Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon presented the Bogura University Act 2026, which was subsequently referred to the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Law for further review and reporting.
The original 2001 legislation, enacted during the administration of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, never took effect and failed to facilitate the establishment of the institution. Following the recent submission, the bill has been tasked with creating a legal framework that reflects contemporary academic and infrastructure requirements.

In his statement accompanying the bill, Minister Milon noted that although the 2001 act was published in the official gazette on July 15 of that year, the project stalled before any administrative or academic operations could commence. The new proposal aligns with a commitment made by the Prime Minister to establish a comprehensive university in the district to foster advanced learning.
The proposed institution is designed to expand beyond the initial focus on science and technology. The draft act mandates that the university provide facilities for education and research across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including biological sciences, engineering, technical studies, humanities, social sciences, business administration, law, agriculture, and medical sciences. Officials state that the primary objective is to create specialized knowledge hubs and develop a skilled workforce capable of meeting modern professional demands.
