College students Mehraj Hossain (19) and Sabbir Sagar (19) went down to bathe in the sea at Banshbaria beach area last Friday afternoon. Later the two were rescued by local fishermen and taken to the hospital where doctors declared Mehraj dead. Both of them were supposed to take part in the HSC examination from Chittagong’s MES College this time.
Mehraj and Sabbir went down to bathe in the sea around 5:30 pm. It can be seen in the video that there was a huge wave in the sea. The current of low tide was dragging Mehraj. At the beginning, Mehraj is seen at least 50 meters from the shore. Sabbir was at a distance of 10 meters. At one point Mehraj started disappearing from the video.
Banshbaria Ferry Ghat is next to the incident site. Saiful Ahmed collected BIWTA toll there. Quoting eyewitnesses, he told Prothom Alo, “When Mehraj was sinking due to the tide, Sabbir tried to rescue him. Both did not know how to swim well. So the two young men started drowning. At one point, the fishermen rescued them with the red boat (ship’s lifeboat).
Saiful Ahmed also said, ‘Two people were rescued and taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex. There the doctor declared Mehraj dead. The other is currently healthy.
According to the police, Mehraj Hossain is the only son of Mosharraf Hossain of East Madarbari area of Doublemooring police station of Chittagong city. Sabbir’s family lives in the building next to where Mehraj Hossain lived. Mehraj and Sabbir are close friends.
Sabbir’s cell phone was called to inquire about the incident. He did not receive the call. However, he gave a message on WhatsApp that he is not mentally well. So can’t talk.
The Deputy Inspector (SI) of Sitakunda Police Station made a report on the condition of Mehraj’s body in the hospital. Russell. He told Prothom Alo, Mehraj’s father is a businessman. Mehraj was his only son. They are originally residents of Bhola district, but have been living in Chittagong city for a long time.
Earlier, on July 24, 2023, two students of the International Islamic University of Chittagong died after taking a bath at the same coast. The deceased students are Muhammad Ali Ahsan of the third semester of Law Department and Md. of the third semester of Koranic Science Department. Enayet Ullah. In two separate accidents on June 21 and July 6, 2018, five youths drowned at this beach. In the last eight years, eight people have died on Banshbaria beach.
