Gazipur health authorities launch probe after newborn suffers broken arm during surgery

Health authorities in Gazipur have launched an investigation after a family alleged that a newborn’s arm was broken during a surgical procedure at a private medical facility in Sreepur. The incident, which reportedly took place Monday afternoon at the Al-Araf Hospital near the Sreepur Railgate area, prompted the district’s civil surgeon to form a three-member inquiry committee to determine how the injury occurred.
The newborn’s family claims that the injury was sustained during a Cesarean section. According to Alamgir Hossain, the infant’s uncle, medical staff advised an immediate X-ray following the birth. Upon reviewing the images on a monitor, Hossain discovered the newborn’s right arm bone was fractured. He further alleged that hospital officials attempted to conceal the medical error, prompting him to force his way into the X-ray room to photograph the evidence. Faced with these findings, the hospital management reportedly agreed to cover the costs of the infant’s subsequent medical care.

Gazingpur Civil Surgeon Mamunur Rahman confirmed the formation of the probe committee on Wednesday morning. The committee is chaired by Kuhu Mutsuddi, a junior consultant in gynecology and obstetrics at the Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex. She is joined by medical officer Sabrina Mohona from the Civil Surgeon’s office and Mohammad Sharif Hossain, an orthopedic surgery consultant at the Kapasia Upazila Health Complex. The investigators have been directed to submit their findings within seven working days.
Sreepur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Shafiqul Islam noted that while the hospital maintains valid licensing and the surgeons involved are considered qualified, the nature of the injury demands a thorough review. The committee is now tasked with evaluating the clinical conduct during the surgery to identify whether the fracture resulted from medical negligence.
