Fatal Bus Accident Sparks Road Blockade and Arson in Rangpur

A prominent Islamic scholar and madrasa superintendent was killed in a road accident on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway Sunday morning, triggering violent protests and a temporary shutdown of the major transit route.
The victim, identified as Abul Kashem, was struck by a Dhaka-bound passenger bus near the Cotton Research Center at the Modern Intersection in Rangpur. Kashem, who served as the superintendent of Ziyatpukur Dakhil Madrasa and as a Khatib at a local mosque, died at the scene. He was a resident of the city’s Dharmadas Milonpara area and originally hailed from Mithapukur upazila.

Witnesses and local police reported that the incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. when the “RM Special” transport bus attempted a reverse maneuver, inadvertently striking the pedestrian. The fatality sparked immediate outrage among local residents, who converged on the highway to blockade traffic. Demanding accountability for the driver and calling for improved road safety measures, protesters stranded hundreds of vehicles for over an hour.
The situation escalated shortly after 10:00 a.m. when demonstrators set fire to the bus involved in the crash. Fire service personnel were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the blaze, while law enforcement officers arrived shortly after to restore order and clear the gridlocked highway.

Tazhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam confirmed that the driver, identified as Mortuza, has been taken into custody. Police stated that the victim’s body has been released to his family, and legal proceedings against the driver are currently underway.
