Son sentenced to 12 years in prison for blinding father's eyes with ghazal bamboo
The court sentenced son Emdadul Haque Badal to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment in the case of killing his father's eyes by hitting him with a ghazal-laced bamboo due to a family dispute in Badda of the capital. At the same time, he has been fined 20,000 taka, in default of which he will have to serve one more year of imprisonment. However, the other accused in the case, Badal's wife, was deleted as the allegations were not proved. Ratna is acquitted.

According to the judgment document, the court sentenced Emdadul Haque Badal to the charges of Sections 326 (grievous hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Penal Code. However, as the charge of attempted murder brought under Section 307 was not proved beyond doubt, he was exempted from this section. The court acquitted Badal's wife Ratna as there was insufficient evidence to support the charges brought against her.
According to the statement and evidence of the case, the incident took place on April 15, 2025 at around 12:30 PM in a house in North Badda. The victim's father Abdul Latif lived on the second floor of the building and his son Badal lived on the third floor. On the day of the incident, the caretaker of the house told Chamiul Haque Badal that his father was asking for money. Later, Badal came down and got into an argument with his father.
Abdul Latif protested when an argument and abuse started between the two. Enraged by this, Badal hit the father's left eye with an iron ghazal wrapped in cloth on a bamboo head about 10 feet long. Abdul Latif fell on the ground. Witnesses told the court that Badal then hit him in different parts of his body. Later family members and neighbors rescued him in a bloody condition and admitted him first to a local hospital and later to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Agargaon.
In this case, the state side presented the CCTV footage, evidence seizure list, medical certificate and statement of nine witnesses in the court.
The investigating officer of the case, SI Mahbubul Alam, told the court that blood-stained genji, bamboo used in the attack, iron ghazal attached to the bamboo head and CCTV footage were seized from the spot. The footage was sent to the CID for forensic examination.
Evidence in court revealed that Badal and his father had been at loggerheads over family and financial matters for a long time. On the day of the incident, other residents of the building heard screams and came out and found Abdul Latif lying in a bloody state. Some witnesses also told the court about seeing bamboo in Badal's hand.
However, the prosecution claimed in the hearing that the incident was staged and that Abdul Latif had fallen and injured himself. But after reviewing the evidence, medical report, CCTV footage and forensic evidence, the court stated that the charges brought against the accused have been proved.
