Dhaka court sends two extortion suspects to jail following remand
A Dhaka court on Saturday ordered two individuals, identified as Tanim Reza Bappi and his associate Rakibul Islam Bhuiyan, to be held in jail following the conclusion of their seven-day remand period in an extortion case. Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid issued the detention order after the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Mominur Rahman of Motijheel Police Station, produced the suspects before the court.
The two men were apprehended in mid-July following a complaint filed by Ismail Hossain, a businessman who held the lease for a temporary sacrificial animal market near the Brothers Union Club in Motijheel. According to the case details, the victim reported receiving a threatening WhatsApp call on May 15, during which Tanim allegedly demanded a 10 lakh taka bribe and insisted that his associate be given a share in the animal market operations. The businessman further alleged that Tanim threatened him with fatal consequences if the demands were not met.
The situation escalated on May 19 when gunfire was reported at the businessman's office. This prompted the victim to initiate a formal extortion case at the Motijheel Police Station the following day. Police subsequently arrested Tanim on the morning of July 17 near the Hotel Purbani area, while Rakibul was taken into custody in North Kamlapur later that afternoon.
Following their initial interrogation, authorities conducted a search based on information provided by the suspects. The operation led to the recovery of a significant cache of weaponry, including a foreign revolver, two foreign pistols, multiple rounds of ammunition, two magazines, an electric gun, and a Chinese axe. A separate case under the Arms Act has been filed by police in connection with the discovery of these weapons.
