Dhaka Court Orders Formal Arrest of Father in Infant Daughter’s Killing
A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered that a man accused of killing his seven-month-old daughter be officially arrested in connection with the murder case. The order was issued by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain following a formal petition submitted by investigators.
The accused, Kabir Islam, a rickshaw puller residing in the Harun Molla slum in the Turag area of the capital, was previously taken into custody on July 17 under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. That arrest followed the death of his daughter, Rafa Moni, who succumbed to severe injuries after being thrown to the ground by her father. The child's grandmother, Sharmin Akter, subsequently filed a formal murder case against him at the local police station.
According to case documents, the incident occurred on the evening of July 16 following a domestic dispute between Kabir and his wife, Lima Akter. Witnesses reported that the couple, who had been married for two years, engaged in a heated argument stemming from Kabir’s long-standing struggle with drug addiction. In a fit of rage, Kabir snatched the infant from her grandmother’s arms and threw her onto the road.
The child was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment but died shortly thereafter. Local residents apprehended Kabir immediately following the assault and turned him over to the police. Following the court's latest directive, the accused remains in custody as the judicial proceedings continue.
