Jatrabari: Young Woman Hacked to Death at Midnight

DHAKA – A 20-year-old college student was hacked to death and three members of her family were injured in an attack in Dhaka's Jatrabari area late Monday night, police said, attributing the violence to a dispute over construction payments. Authorities have arrested a contractor in connection with the incident.

Diya Moni Noboni, a student at Borhan Uddin College, succumbed to her injuries after the assailant attacked her family at their home in the Vanga Press area. Her mother, Nusrat Jahan Mousumi, 42, brother Muaz Ahmed, 15, and sister Joya, 12, sustained injuries in the same attack.

Police identified the arrested suspect as 45-year-old Abu Musa, who was working as a contractor for the family's construction project. Musa was apprehended at the scene with injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard.

According to Billal Hossain, the driver who transported the injured to the hospital, Musa attacked the family with a sharp weapon, also injuring himself in the process. Neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help, rescued the victims, and detained Musa. Hossain independently corroborated the police's preliminary assessment that the dispute stemmed from financial disagreements related to the construction work.

Diya's body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, according to Inspector Md. Faruk, in-charge of the hospital's police outpost.
