Elderly man killed in Coxs Bazar over long-standing local dispute

A 65-year-old man was killed in a violent confrontation in Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua upazila late Friday, according to local police. Abu Taher, a resident of Harun Matbarpara in the Mognama Union, succumbed to his injuries after being struck with a sharp weapon during a dispute.
The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 p.m. when Taher and his son, Mohammad Tareq, investigated after stones were thrown at their home. Upon stepping outside, they encountered 27-year-old Sifat, the son of local resident Nur Hoshen. The confrontation quickly escalated from a verbal altercation into a physical struggle. Witnesses and police reports indicate that Sifat struck Taher on his left arm with a machete before fleeing the scene. The victim was rushed to the Pekua Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead by attending physicians.

Local residents suggested the violence was rooted in a lingering grudge. Several months ago, Sifat had been subjected to a village arbitration for allegedly harassing a woman, an encounter that resulted in him signing a formal bond. According to Tareq, this arbitration created ongoing friction between his father and the suspect. Tareq further alleged that Sifat was accompanied by several accomplices who aided in his escape following the attack.
Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mehedi Hasan confirmed that the murder was driven by these long-standing personal tensions. Law enforcement officials have launched a search operation to apprehend Sifat, who remains at large. The victim’s body has been transferred to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
