High Court clears way for June 7 Bangladesh Cricket Board elections
The High Court of Bangladesh has dismissed a writ petition challenging the legitimacy of the voter list and the election schedule for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), clearing the path for the board’s board of directors election to proceed as planned on June 7.
The order was delivered on Wednesday by a High Court bench comprised of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Md. Ashiqur Rahman. Following the hearing, the court categorized the petition as "not pressed," effectively allowing the election process to move forward without judicial interference.
The legal challenge was initiated on May 18 by a group of six petitioners, including Armanul Islam Noyon, who sought to stay the election schedule and contest a May 6 directive issued by the BCB’s Chief Executive Officer. That directive had requested district sports association presidents—who serve as deputy commissioners—to nominate councilors for the upcoming election cycle. The petitioners argued they had been duly appointed as councilors for the 2025–2029 term and claimed they were improperly excluded from the draft and final voter lists released by the BCB’s election commission on May 17 and May 19, respectively.
In addition to the initial filing, the petitioners submitted a supplementary application on May 24, requesting the court to intervene in the election schedule and mandate the inclusion of their names in a revised voter list. The respondents named in the writ included the secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the chairman of the National Sports Council, the president of the BCB ad-hoc committee, the BCB CEO, and the deputy commissioners of several districts.
Following the dismissal, BCB counsel Mahin M. Rahman confirmed that the court's ruling ensures no further legal barriers remain for the scheduled vote. He noted that because the petition was dismissed, it cannot be refiled before another bench, thereby cementing the timeline for the board’s upcoming governance transition. During the proceedings, the state was represented by Attorney General Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque, while the petitioners were represented by senior lawyer Mohammad Hossain.
