Dhaka police arrest two suspected gold smugglers in Dhanmondi

Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested two men on Thursday after seizing a cache of smuggled gold during a targeted operation in the capital's Dhanmondi area. The suspects, identified as 52-year-old Gobinda Mondal and 35-year-old Rajon Chandra Sarkar, were intercepted while traveling on a motorcycle near the Moghal Kebab restaurant on Road 27.

The operation followed a tip-off received by the Dhanmondi Model Police station, which indicated that a shipment of gold, smuggled through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, was being transported toward the Hazaribagh area. Acting on this intelligence, law enforcement officials established a security checkpoint, successfully identifying and stopping the suspects’ vehicle.

According to Niyaz Mehedi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Public Relations Division, officers recovered a significant quantity of gold jewelry from the pair during the search. The motorcycle used to transport the illicit shipment was also seized by the authorities.

Under preliminary interrogation, the suspects admitted that the gold had been brought into the country illegally to evade customs duties and was being distributed to various locations. Police have launched legal proceedings against the men as investigations into the broader smuggling network continue.
