Court Orders Prison Interrogation for Suspect in Jamaat MP Assault Case
A Dhaka court has ordered the interrogation of Rakibul Hasan, an accused in an attempted murder case involving expelled Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, at the prison gate. Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Ripon Hossain issued the directive on Friday after denying a prosecution request for a five-day remand, citing the health condition of the defendant.
The case stems from allegations that the former MP from the Satkhira-4 constituency orchestrated an attack on his personal driver, Obaidur Rahman, following the circulation of compromising video footage. According to police, the investigative officer had sought to remand Hasan to uncover further details regarding the attack and to recover the digital materials central to the scandal.
The legal proceedings were initiated after Rahman filed a complaint alleging he was lured to a residence in the capital’s Pallabi area on July 14, where he was severely beaten and nearly strangled by associates of the lawmaker. Rahman contends that he was targeted due to suspicions that he had leaked personal videos of the politician and a young woman—a relative of the complainant—to an extortion ring.
Tensions escalated earlier this week when multiple videos showing the lawmaker in intimate situations with the woman surfaced online. While some party members initially claimed the footage was AI-generated, Gazi Nazrul Islam later issued a statement on social media asserting that the woman is his second wife. He claimed the marriage took place in June with the consent of his first wife.
Despite these claims, Jamaat-e-Islami moved swiftly to expel the legislator, citing "moral turpitude." The party has officially notified the Speaker of the National Parliament and the Election Commission, requesting formal action against him. Another suspect in the case, Aminur Rahman, was remanded to custody by the court earlier this week.
The victim, Rahman, who remains in hiding due to persistent threats, reported that he had previously confronted the lawmaker regarding the illicit nature of the relationship, which he claims initiated the conflict. Authorities are continuing to investigate the broader circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the subsequent extortion attempts.
