Dispute Over Wedding Meal Sparks Clashes in Bangladesh Leaving 11 Injured

A wedding celebration in Faridpur’s Bhanga upazila descended into violence on Monday after a dispute over the quantity of beef served to guests triggered a clash between the bride’s family and local villagers. The altercation, which broke out at approximately 3:00 p.m. in Deora Nayakandi village, resulted in at least 11 injuries.
According to local witnesses, the conflict began during a meal at the residence of Lavlu Sheikh, who was hosting his daughter’s wedding. Guests invited by the bride’s family reportedly complained about the portion sizes of meat provided, leading to a heated verbal argument. The situation escalated rapidly as both sides began hurling bricks and wielding sticks.

Four individuals—identified as Arif Mia, Shahid Matubbar, Sohrab Matubbar, and Momtaz Begum—sustained injuries severe enough to require admission to the Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. Others involved in the brawl received primary medical treatment locally.
Rezaul Matubbar, chairman of the Kalamridha Union Parishad, noted that while the initial spark was the distribution of food, underlying tensions regarding local dominance also played a role in the violence. He clarified that the dispute did not involve the groom’s side. Despite the disruption, the groom and his party arrived shortly after the incident, and the wedding ceremony was completed without further interference.

Lavlu Sheikh lamented that his daughter’s wedding was marred by long-standing village factionalism. He asserted that the incident was not merely about a food dispute, but a deliberate attempt by certain villagers to sabotage the wedding festivities.
Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed that law enforcement responded to the scene and managed to restore order. While the area has since returned to normalcy, authorities reported that no formal written complaints have been filed by either party.
