Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam alleges extortion after intimate video surfaces online

Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam has denied allegations of misconduct after an intimate video involving him and a young woman circulated on social media, sparking public controversy. The footage, which began spreading online Monday night, reportedly captures the Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker in a private room.

Azizur Rahman, secretary of the Satkhira district branch of Jamaat-e-Islami, stated that the party believes the footage originated from closed-circuit television recordings at a residence in Dhaka, though the origin of the video has not been independently verified.

Addressing the controversy on Tuesday, Mr. Islam released a statement via his official Facebook page, labeling the viral video a product of extortion and a targeted conspiracy. The MP explained that the incident occurred on July 13 while he was visiting a business office in Dhaka’s Maghbazar area accompanied by his first wife, Maksudada Begum, and his second wife, Mariam Begum.

According to Mr. Islam, the couple was held captive in the office by a group of unidentified individuals led by his second wife’s uncle, Obaidullah, who allegedly extorted 100,000 taka from them. The MP further claimed that his driver, in collusion with Obaidullah, later confiscated his rental vehicle and demanded additional payments under threat.

Mr. Islam asserted that the dissemination of the video is a retaliatory act stemming from a long-standing familial dispute and business rivalry involving his second wife’s father. He categorically rejected suggestions of an extramarital affair, describing the narrative as baseless and defamatory.

To clarify his personal status, the lawmaker stated that he married Mariam Begum on June 17 with the full consent of his first wife. Condemning the act as an invasion of privacy intended to undermine his social standing and character, Mr. Islam has called upon relevant authorities to take legal action against those responsible for the recording and distribution of the footage.
