Day laborer beaten to death following verbal dispute in Joypurhat

A 50-year-old day laborer was beaten to death in Joypurhat’s Akkelpur upazila on Saturday following a verbal altercation over the use of the word “kamla”—a colloquial term for a farmhand. The incident, which has shocked the local community, occurred on a road in Kashira village and resulted in the immediate arrest of the suspect, 35-year-old Hasan Ali.

The victim, Shyamal Chandra Mali, a resident of Kashira Shilpara village, was traveling to a local market when he encountered Ali, who is known to locals as a drug-addicted vagrant. According to eyewitness accounts, the dispute began when Shyamal addressed Ali as a “kamla” while inquiring whether he would be available to harvest rice for a local farmer. The conversation quickly escalated into a heated argument, during which Ali allegedly struck Shyamal on the head with a heavy tree branch.

Bystanders and relatives rushed the critically injured man to the Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Dr. Mehjabin Akter, who attended to the victim in the emergency department, reported that the deceased had suffered severe head trauma, evidenced by bleeding from the nose and mouth. She noted that the fatal injury appeared to be caused by a significant blow to the skull.

Following the assault, Ali attempted to flee the scene but was pursued and captured by the victim’s nephew, Sushant Chandra Mali, approximately one kilometer away. Police were alerted via the 999 national emergency hotline and took custody of the suspect shortly thereafter.

The victim’s brother, Parimal Chandra Mali, filed a murder case with the local police station late Saturday night. On Sunday morning, authorities formally arrested Ali and transferred him to court. The victim’s body has been sent to the Joypurhat General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Shyamal Chandra Mali is survived by his wife, Dipali Mali, and two children. As family members gathered at the hospital on Saturday evening, his widow issued a plea for justice, mourning the sudden loss of her husband and the instability now facing her children. Akkelpur Police Inspector Mominul Islam confirmed that the investigation is ongoing as the legal process against the suspect proceeds.
