Court orders arrest of former lawmaker and police official in July uprising murder case

A Dhaka court has ordered the formal arrest of three high-profile figures, including a former lawmaker and a senior police official, in connection with the killing of Emon Gazi during the July mass uprising. The directive, issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque, concerns the murder case filed at the capital’s Jatrabari Police Station.

The individuals named in the order are former Member of Parliament for Dhaka-5 Harunur Rashid, former Additional Inspector General of Police Iqbal Bahar, and Kazi Monirul Islam, the president of the Jatrabari unit of the Awami League, an organization currently facing severe operational restrictions.

According to state counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon, the case was originally filed on August 28, 2024. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Emadul Karim of Jatrabari Police Station, submitted separate petitions seeking to officially book the three men for the murder.

In his submission to the court, the investigator stated that preliminary findings have linked the trio to the violent events that occurred during the uprising. The petitions emphasized that their formal arrest is essential to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the killing.

All three suspects are currently being held in judicial custody in connection with other pending criminal cases.
