Content creator arrested for harassing Chinese tourist at Paharpur Buddhist Monastery

Tourist police have arrested a content creator in Bangladesh for harassing a Chinese national visiting the historic Paharpur Buddhist Vihara, an incident that sparked widespread public outrage after a video of the encounter went viral on social media.
The suspect, 40-year-old Abdul Mabut, is known to his online audience as “Hero Nana.” He was taken into custody on Monday afternoon in the Majhipara area of Joypurhat district following an investigation launched by authorities over the weekend.

The incident occurred last Friday when the Chinese tourist was visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site. During the encounter, Mabut exploited the visitor’s language barrier to pose a series of invasive and uncomfortable questions while filming the interaction. A 30-second clip of the harassment was subsequently posted to Facebook, drawing immediate condemnation from locals, tourism industry officials, and social media users who argued the stunt was performed solely to gain views at the expense of the nation’s international reputation.
In response to the backlash, the suspect’s son, Rafi, claimed his father did not realize the gravity of his actions and had intended the video as a joke.

Mohammad Fazlul Karim, custodian of the Paharpur Buddhist Vihara under the Department of Archaeology, alerted tourist police as soon as the video surfaced, noting that such behavior causes irreparable damage to the site’s prestige and historical standing. Following the formal complaint, tourist police initiated an operation that led to the arrest.
The accused has been transferred to the Badalgachhi Police Station, where a case has been filed against him by Sub-Inspector Mezbaul Haque on charges of intimidation and disturbing the peace. Inspector Nazrul Islam, who is overseeing the investigation, confirmed that the legal process is currently underway to address the harassment of the foreign national.
