Two Youths Rescue Passenger Who Fell From Launch Into Chandpur River
A passenger traveling from Dhaka to Barisal was rescued from the confluence of three rivers in Chandpur late Thursday night after falling from a moving vessel during the Eid festivities. The man, identified as Tareq, survived nearly an hour in the strong currents of the Meghna and Dakatia confluence before being pulled to safety by two local youths.
According to the Chandpur River Police, the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. while the passenger was aboard the Sundarban-2 launch. Officials report that Tareq fell from the stern of the vessel as it passed through the Baro Station area. He struggled against the river's powerful currents for an extended period, eventually catching the attention of two nearby residents who dived into the water to reach him. Using a small boat, the rescuers managed to bring him to the shore.
Following the rescue, Tareq was rushed to the Chandpur General Hospital in critical condition. Dr. Tanmoy Majumder, who is overseeing his treatment, noted that the prolonged exposure to the water caused significant amounts of fluid to enter the patient’s lungs. He is currently receiving intensive care, including high-flow oxygen support.
