Chittagong Court Sentences Man to Death for 2024 Murder of Eight-Year-Old Girl

A court in Chittagong has sentenced 45-year-old Babu Sheikh to death for the murder of an eight-year-old girl in the hilly regions of Sitakunda. Judge Jannatul Ferdous of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon, concluding a swift trial that reached a judgment within just 12 working days.
The defendant, a resident of Gobindaganj in Gaibandha who lived in a rented room adjacent to the victim’s home in Sitakunda, was present in court when the sentence was read. Following the ruling, he was remanded to prison.

The case dates back to March 1, when the second-grade student was abducted by the accused. According to police reports, Sheikh lured the girl to the Sitakunda Botanical Garden and Ecopark area under false pretenses. Authorities stated that the motive for the attack stemmed from a personal dispute between the accused and the victim’s father, who worked as a local transport driver.
Upon reaching the remote hilly terrain, Sheikh reportedly attempted to assault the child before slashing her throat with a knife. Despite her severe injuries, the girl managed to walk out of the forest and seek help from road maintenance workers, who discovered her in critical condition. She was transported to a local health complex and subsequently transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on March 3. Police arrested the suspect in the Kumira area of Sitakunda shortly after the incident.

The legal proceedings moved quickly following a police investigation that concluded with the filing of a formal charge sheet on June 11. The court framed charges on June 18, and witness testimony commenced on June 21. After reviewing the testimonies of 16 witnesses, the court found Sheikh guilty of the heinous crime, leading to the capital punishment sentence.
