Necessary to protect street children Why not make regulations: High Court
The High Court has given a ruling seeking to know why the necessary rules, regulations or laws should not be made to ensure the protection, rehabilitation and welfare of street children. Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md. on the preliminary hearing of a writ. The High Court bench consisting of Asif Hasan gave this ruling on Sunday.
The rule also sought to know why the inaction and indifference of the concerned authorities in taking urgent and effective steps to ensure the protection of the fundamental rights of all street children in the country should not be declared illegal and beyond legal authority.
On May 7, the petition was filed by the chairman of the organization on behalf of the human rights organization Equitas Foundation regarding the inaction to ensure the protection of street children. The lawyer heard the writ in court. Tanveer Ahmed, accompanied by lawyers Biplab Kumar Poddar and SM Zakir Hossain. Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman was in the hearing for the state.
Lawyer Md. Tanveer Ahmed said, the rule also sought to know why the investigation and survey about the actual condition of street children across the country will not be conducted, why strict supervision and accountability system will not be ensured and why effective measures will not be taken to prevent all forms of harassment, torture, neglect or exploitation.
The lawyer for the writ petitioner said that the defendants, including the Secretary of Social Welfare, the Director General of the Department of Social Services (Additional Secretary), the Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children, and the Law Secretary, have been asked to respond to the ruling within six weeks.
