Cardiologist pledges free medical care for veteran regional folk artist Anil Hazarika

Anil Hazarika, a 70-year-old songwriter and artist celebrated for preserving the regional folk music of the greater Jashore area, has received a lifeline after a cardiologist stepped forward to fund his long-term medical treatment. Prosenjit Biswas, an assistant professor and heart specialist at Jhenaidah 250-Bed General Hospital, committed to providing free care after learning of the veteran artist’s plight through local media reports.

Hazarika, a resident of Tilkhari village in Magura’s Shalikha upazila, has spent decades documenting regional heritage through his art. With a repertoire of approximately 1,300 songs, his work has been featured on Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, earning him multiple accolades throughout his career. However, his life took a difficult turn five years ago when he began suffering from a chronic heart condition. Faced with severe financial hardship, the artist had been unable to afford proper medical care, ultimately prompting him to appeal for government assistance.

Upon reading about Hazarika’s struggle, Dr. Biswas arranged for the artist to be transported to his chamber in Jhenaidah to begin a comprehensive treatment plan. The physician stated that he felt a moral and professional obligation to assist a man who had contributed so significantly to the nation’s cultural landscape.

In a social media statement announcing the initiative, Dr. Biswas emphasized that supporting artists in their time of need is a collective responsibility for society. The cardiologist expressed his commitment to providing the necessary consultations and heart-related treatments at no cost to the artist.

Hazarika expressed deep gratitude for the support, noting that the media coverage of his situation was instrumental in connecting him with the care he desperately needed. The artist thanked the medical professional for his timely intervention, which has provided him with renewed hope for his recovery.
