BNP issues show-cause notice to local leader over alleged assault of primary school headmaster

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a show-cause notice to a local leader in Joypurhat following allegations that he physically assaulted a primary school headmaster with a shoe. Harunur Rashid, president of the party’s ward unit in Rukindipur Union, Akkelpur upazila, has been formally asked to explain his conduct, as the party launches an internal investigation into the incident.

The controversy centers on an altercation that took place on June 21 at Rowair Government Primary School regarding the formation of the school’s managing committee. Azadul Rahman, the headmaster, alleged that during a dispute over the committee’s composition, Rashid subjected him to physical abuse. Following the incident, Rahman filed a formal complaint with the officer-in-charge of Akkelpur Police Station on June 22, with copies submitted to the local Upazila Nirbahi Officer and the education officer.

Public scrutiny intensified after Rahman detailed his allegations during a press conference held at the Upazila Freedom Fighter Complex, which subsequently received media coverage. In response to the growing criticism, Rukindipur Union BNP president Aminur Rahman and general secretary Abu Shahed Md. Sahidul Akram issued a show-cause notice to Rashid on Friday evening. The party has demanded a written explanation within three days, warning that failure to provide a satisfactory response will lead to further organizational disciplinary action.

A five-member investigative committee, led by union BNP vice president Kamruzzaman Jewel, has been established to probe the allegations. The committee is required to submit its findings within seven days.

Harunur Rashid has denied the accusations, characterizing the headmaster’s claims as false, baseless, and politically motivated. While Rashid confirmed receipt of the show-cause notice, he maintained that the charges were manufactured to damage his reputation. Local BNP leadership indicated that the party is treating the matter with significant gravity, pledging that a final decision on Rashid’s political future will be made following the completion of the internal inquiry.
