Birds Battle for Dominance

A fierce territorial clash unfolded in Dhaka’s National Botanical Garden on May 6, 2023, when a female Greater Racket-tailed Drongo repeatedly attacked a Coppersmith Barbet, an incident that vividly demonstrated the intense, often aggressive, survival strategies employed by birds during their breeding season.
The confrontation was witnessed by a photographer, who, recovering from an injury sustained during a February 2023 trip to photograph Irrawaddy dolphins in the Sundarbans, had opted for local birdwatching within the Mirpur park. On the morning of the incident, the photographer entered the botanical garden near the zoo, eventually making their way towards the Goran Chatbari Gate, an area known for its vibrant avian activity.
The vicinity of the Goran Chatbari Gate was bustling with various bird species, including drongos, barbets, jungle mynas, common mynas, oriental magpie-robins, coppersmith barbets, and orioles, all engaged in their breeding rituals. Observers noted significant activity around nests, particularly those of the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and Coppersmith Barbet. A drongo nest, situated in one of two adjacent trees, contained four chicks, mere days old, being fed alternately by their parents. Nearby, a Coppersmith Barbet had built its nest in a dead tree, where one parent was incubating eggs while its mate perched on a nearby branch.
At precisely 10:14:36 AM, a female Greater Racket-tailed Drongo swooped in with considerable force, pecking at the Coppersmith Barbet. For approximately 50 seconds, the drongo persisted, striking from both sides, while the barbet steadfastly defended its position without retaliating or retreating. This aggressive interaction recurred for nearly an hour before the observers shifted their attention. Although the Coppersmith Barbet posed no apparent threat, the drongo seemingly perceived it as such, initiating the assault.
Such aggressive avian behavior, particularly amplified during the breeding season, is a complex and multifaceted strategy crucial for survival. A primary driver is mate competition, where male birds vie to attract females, often engaging in physical combat, elaborate calls, dances, or plumage displays to demonstrate strength and genetic fitness.
Territory establishment and maintenance are equally vital. During the breeding cycle, each pair of birds claims a specific area for nesting, foraging, and security. Any intrusion into this established territory often triggers an immediate, aggressive response. Furthermore, the defense of nests, eggs, and chicks elicits the most intense aggression, turning even typically placid birds into fierce protectors against predators like snakes, cats, or other birds. They may even attack humans if perceived as a threat.
Competition for food also escalates during the breeding season, as the energetic demands for egg production, nest building, and chick rearing increase significantly. Limited food resources lead to clashes, with stronger birds typically securing more food at the expense of weaker rivals. Social hierarchies within flocks can also dictate access to food and perching spots, with positions often determined through physical encounters.
Hormonal influences play a critical role, with elevated hormone levels during the breeding season stimulating the nervous system and contributing to heightened aggression. Birds may also misinterpret signals, attacking their own reflections in glass or shiny surfaces, a tendency that intensifies when hormones surge.
Ultimately, aggressive behavior is an adaptive process governed by a “cost-benefit” principle. While conflicts are common, birds typically avoid inflicting fatal injuries, as severe harm could jeopardize their reproductive success. Thus, many confrontations conclude symbolically. These clashes, which might appear as mere fights to human observers, represent nature’s essential struggle for survival, successful reproduction, and the transmission of genes.
