Kushtia man found dead following post-World Cup domestic dispute
A tragic domestic dispute in Kushtia’s Bheramara upazila ended in the death of a 25-year-old farmer on Monday, hours after he returned home from watching the World Cup final. The body of the victim, Suman Hossain, was discovered hanging from a beam in his home in the 16 Dag Dakkhinpara area by family members early Monday morning.
Suman, the son of local resident Afzal Hossain, leaves behind his wife, Jeni Khatun, and two young children, aged five and one-and-a-half. According to local reports, the incident followed a late-night argument between the couple upon Suman’s return from watching the match.
Jeni Khatun told reporters that her husband arrived home around 4:00 a.m. after watching the game. She recounted questioning him about his late return, which led to a brief verbal exchange before he left the house again. She claimed she fell asleep shortly after, only to wake up at dawn to find his body hanging inside their room.
A neighbor, Abdul Jalil, reported hearing cries from the house at approximately 5:30 a.m. while returning from morning prayers. He entered the home and, with the assistance of another individual, lowered Suman to the ground. A local physician was summoned, who pronounced the young farmer dead at the scene.
Bheramara Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Jahidur Rahman confirmed that authorities have initiated an investigation into the death. While officials currently suspect suicide, the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy remain under review. Police noted that, alongside the reported marital disagreement, there was local discussion regarding the victim's strong affinity for the Argentina football team, though investigators have not established a direct link between the match and the fatality.
