BGB halts unauthorized BSF construction along Lalmonirhat border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) successfully blocked an attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to install reinforced concrete (RCC) pillars along the border in Patgram upazila, Lalmonirhat. The incident occurred over two days at the Poyshatti Bari frontier, where BSF personnel and construction crews were compelled to halt operations and withdraw their materials following firm intervention by local BGB forces.

Karimul Islam, assistant director of the BGB’s Lalmonirhat 61 Battalion, confirmed the developments on Wednesday. According to officials, the tension began Tuesday when BSF teams initiated plans to replace existing bamboo perimeter markers with permanent RCC pillars near Harikamat village in India’s Cooch Behar district.

Although the construction site was located approximately 100 yards inside Indian territory, the BGB patrol team identified the activity as a violation of established border protocols. Upon receiving the BGB’s formal objection, the BSF laborers ceased their efforts and retreated from the site with their equipment.

To address the friction and prevent further escalation, the two forces held a flag meeting on Wednesday afternoon. During the discussion, BGB representatives explicitly informed their Indian counterparts that the replacement of traditional bamboo markers with permanent concrete structures is prohibited under current bilateral agreements. BSF officials agreed to comply with the directive, and the situation at the border has since returned to normal.
