Hefazat-e-Islam Welcomes Progress in Shapla Chattar Case, Thanks Government
A delegation from the Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam met with the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday, expressing satisfaction with the accelerated progress of a case stemming from a deadly crackdown on their rally at Motijheel's Shapla Chattar in 2013. The group conveyed their gratitude to the government and the prosecution team for prioritizing the case.
Hefazat-e-Islam leaders stated that since Md. Aminul Islam assumed the role of Chief Prosecutor, the investigation into the killings that occurred during the Shapla Chattar rally has moved forward significantly. The group specifically highlighted the swiftness of the proceedings under the new chief prosecutor, noting that the case, initiated during an interim government, had seen substantial progress recently.
During their meeting at the tribunal premises, Hefazat-e-Islam's Joint General Secretary, Azizul Haque Islamabadi, informed reporters that the Chief Prosecutor confirmed the collection of all necessary data and evidence related to the events of May 5, 2013. He added that the final report is slated for submission on June 7.
Isalmabadi further detailed that the delegation formally requested the Chief Prosecutor to bring Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet members, as well as officials from the police, RAB, BGB, and joint forces involved on that day, to justice. Hefazat-e-Islam seeks a exemplary punishment for those responsible for what they described as the "massacre of innocent, unarmed people," demanding justice from the court and aiming to deter future incidents of such violence.
