Bangladesh government forces police official into retirement over misconduct with actress

The Bangladeshi government has mandatorily retired Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Golam Saklain following a formal investigation that confirmed he engaged in an “unethical intimate relationship” with actress Pori Moni. The dismissal order was issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the authority of the President.

Saklain, who currently serves at the Jhenaidah In-Service Training Center, previously acted as an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) for the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). His professional conduct came under intense scrutiny in 2021 after he was tasked with investigating a case filed by Pori Moni against businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmood. Media reports later surfaced alleging that Saklain had hosted the actress at his official residence for approximately 18 hours just days before a high-profile raid on her home by the Rapid Action Battalion.

The government initiated disciplinary proceedings against Saklain in February 2023, charging him with “misconduct.” According to the ministry’s notification, an investigation committee was appointed in August 2023 after Saklain’s initial responses and personal hearings failed to exonerate him. The committee submitted its findings in December 2023, confirming that the officer had violated professional standards and compromised the image of the police force.

Following the investigation, the government served a second show-cause notice in February 2024. After reviewing his subsequent response and the gravity of the proven charges, the authorities consulted with the Bangladesh Public Service Commission. The Commission concurred that mandatory retirement was the appropriate disciplinary measure for the misconduct.

The President officially approved the recommendation on June 17, leading to Thursday’s formal notification. The order states that Saklain is being retired under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules of 2018, citing his failure to uphold the responsibilities required of a senior law enforcement official.
