Arrest warrant against Sirajganj MP Amir Hamza

The court has issued an arrest warrant against Kushtia-3 Constituency Member of Parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Amir Hamza in a case filed against Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku for making defamatory comments. The judge of Sirajganj Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court gave orders in this regard on Tuesday.

Earlier, Amir Hamza was summoned to appear in court. However, as he did not appear in court on the scheduled date, the judge ordered the issuance of an arrest warrant against him.

Nasir Uddin, the assistant counsel for the state side of that court, told Prothom Alo, “On April 2, the court issued a summons to Kushtia-3 (Sadar) member of parliament and Jamaat leader Amir Hamza to appear in court on April 21 in a case of defamation. As he did not appear on the scheduled date, the court issued an arrest warrant against him and ordered his arrest.  

Member of Parliament Amir Hamza was contacted today around 12 noon to find out about this. Knowing the identity of the journalist, he said, “I am in the car, I will talk later.” Regarding the arrest warrant issued in the Sirajganj court, he said, “I don’t know about that.”

On April 2, Sirajganj District Sessions and Judge Court Additional Government Counsel and District Bar Association General Secretary Humayun Kabir filed the case as plaintiff. According to him, Amir Hamza has done a very rude thing by calling Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, an accomplished son of Sirajganj, an atheist. Along with that, he also made ugly comments against Islam. Because of this, he got angry and filed a case against him under section 296, 500 and 504.  

On March 26, Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud gave a speech honoring the great liberation war of 1971 and the brave freedom fighters. Amir Hamza, a member of Parliament, said that he was an atheist and anti-Islam in a discussion before the Friday prayer sermon at Hatsh Haripur Bara Jame Mosque in Kushtia Sadar Upazila.
